Hat Ladies Gallery
For these works, I gessoed found cardboard and attached pages from a 1950's grammar book to the substrate. I then brushed layers of acrylic paint onto the surface, sometimes rubbing the paint with a towel. I also wrote random thoughts that made me feel confident and sassy in graphite between the layers of paint. I attached found packaging material, which I paired with drawings I did from fashion sketches from the 1930's and 40's. I tried to choose packaging material with text I felt helped reflect the personalities of the ladies I drew. I had my drawings burned onto a silk-screen and printed them onto the final collage. With this series, I sought to create works that reflected self-confident women and in the process, explored my own femininity and built self-confidence.
